Derrinacahara National School, nestled at the foot of Cnoc na n-Abhann (Nowen Hill), is a 5 teacher, co-educational school welcoming and respecting children from all backgrounds and cultures. We pride ourselves on our holistic approach to learning where children’s individual talents are nurtured and all children are encouraged to reach their full potential.

Maths and Science

We are an innovative school. We like to provide opportunities for our students to engage in hands on learning, for example, Maths Problem Solving Workshops, Lego Workshops, Visits to the Life-Time Lab. We incorporate the visual arts drama, music and art into our daily learning.

Literacy

We place huge value on the importance of literacy. Every year we update our library and children all engage in our Paired Reading scheme and our Reading Buddies programme. We enjoy fortnightly visits from the mobile library bus and trips to our local library in Dunmanway.

Practical Learning

We recognise that children learn in a variety of styles, so, with this in mind we provide opportunities for activities such as cookery, drama and art and crafts.

Active School

Derrinacahara National School is an active school. We participate in all sporting events and competitions. Physical Education includes aquatics, athletics, games, gymnastics, dance and outdoor adventure activities.
