Everyone looking great in support of Cork for the Munster Football Final. Thanks to Miss O’Sullivan, Cork’s biggest fan, for facilitating it. It’s such a pity her jersey was in the wash for the day! There was a little family clash between Cork and Tipperary too! Disappointed that Cork were beaten but delighted for Tipperary to win on such an historic day, wearing jerseys to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Active School Week

Children enjoying the great outdoors, getting lots of fresh air whilst keeping fit and active. Looking forward to seeing lots more photos.

Engineers Week in Derrinacahara

What fun we had learning about all the different types of engineers around the world, what they do and the contributions they have made to our world. We were also civil engineers for a day and created some fantastic bridges. Congratulations to the winning team, who created a fabulous structure, that could even hold up weights. Possibly the greatest spaghetti bridge ever created 🙂

Maths Outside!

Hard to beat taking the classroom outdoors! Well done to 2nd, 3rd and 4th class on their fabulous team spirit and hard work in their recent maths trails.

FAI 5 a side soccer

West Cork Final of FAI 5 a side soccer against Ballinacarriga N.S. What a game! Two evenly matched teams! Unfortunately for us Ballinacarriga managed to slip just 1 goal past us and so now go through to the County section. Congratulations and well done to both teams. Sport at its best. Our boys from Derrinacahara were just wonderful and we are so, so proud of them. Steven was heroic in goal, Shane and James defended so well and Ryan and Conor gave it everything they could up the middle with our subs Kevin and Luca giving their best. In all we scored 22 goals and only conceded 5. Definitely a day for the record books 👍

Yummy, yummy, Pancakes!!

Spring is back! Yippee! Stephanie and our Junior Classes harvested the last of our spuds!

2nd, 3rd and 4th class hard at work!

Celebrating Grandparents Day at Derrinacahara N.S.

What a wonderful day we had today at Derrinacahara N.S. where we celebrated Grandparents Day. The highlight of the day was Mary McCarthy, Tommy’s Great Grandmother, who travelled from Ballinaspittle to be with us. Thank you so much to all the Grannies and Grandads for calling to see us. You hold such a special place in your grandchildren’s lives and they love you dearly.

We are so grateful 🤗 This year we took the children to the Panto ‘Jack & The Beanstalk’ at The Everyman Theatre. What a fabulous day we had! The children were so well behaved. They are a credit to their families and their school. We are so proud of them. Please support Tar Isteach in return. Thank you 🤶🏻👍

Science Week

November 10th – 17th this year is Science week. Well done to Jack, Adam and Tim from 4th class who attended an event in UCC for science week this weekend. They have written a piece of their wonderful experience. Fantastic lads!

‘   We went to UCC for Science Week on Sunday, November 10th. First we had a look around and we saw a brain coral, that was from the ocean. It was very cool. After that, we went in to a maths room and played lots of games.

At 1.00 we went in to a LEGO room and we made a LEGO land yacht with two sails. Then, at the end of it all we got somebody to blow and electric fan and our yacht made a distance of 4 1/2 metres!

After the LEGO. we went to the family room. We had a look around but one thing caught our eye…… a simulator. Unfortunately there was a long line so we made Mom stay and we had a look around. Then we saw a wave machine made of duck tape, sticks and jelly babies. It you moved one stick, the whole thing moved!

We then made a card and coloured it in. We also attached a light bulb to the card. We used copper tape to help make the light bulb turn on.

When it was our turn for the simulator we were excited. When we got in to the simulator there was a robot who gave us discs and when we put the discs in to the machine it gave us lots of different things.

Next, we went to a room with a digestive system, like a bouncy castle. We went in through the mouth and came out the bottom! It was really fun! We got cool gift bags at the end.

By Jack, Tim and Adam

PS. We also got to go to McDonalds afterwards!  ‘

Parish Leagues

Well done to all of our students who took part in the hurling parish league with Sam Maguires recently. Thanks to Mícheál for bringing in the cup, he captained the winning team. We are very proud of you all.  Maith sibh!

Autumn Trail

Out and about for SESE, great to get out a hunt for autumnal items in groups. Taking the classroom outside, working together and making learning fun.

Halloween 2019

We had some seriously spooky characters in school today, we’re not sure where our regular students went. A well deserved day of treats and games. 🙂

Kinrath House

A fine, fresh morning for a fabulous walk to Kinrath house. A huge thank you to Áine Brosnan who accompanied us on our trip to a local heritage site and who taught us so much. An informative, active and enjoyable morning was had by all.

Sports Day

A big thank you to the 4th years from MICC. who came and organised lots of fun activities for all our classes. The pupils really enjoyed it and we wish you all the very best of luck with the rest of your fundraising. Maith sibh!

Futsal

A new venture for all of us in Derrinacahara to take part in the FAI futsal tournament held in Dunmanway. A great way to test fitness and to perfect our soccer skills with this fun and fast game. A great opportunity to meet our friends from our neighbouring schools too, of course!

Orienteering at Inchydoney!

We were so excited to be able to take Ranganna 4, 5 agus a 6 to Inchydoney Beach for this year’s orienteering. We began in the western car park and explored both beaches on either side of Inchydoney Island Lodge. Some of our groups were back in 20 minutes!! – a testament to their determination and fitness. Well done!

Welcome Autumn!

Wonderful display by Junior & Senior Infants along with Rang a hAon. Is maith liom an ghráinneog ❤️

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love this photo of Ava and her Nana. I’ll always remember how kind Micheál and Kitty were to me when I came to Derrinacahara in 1999. It’s always lovely to welcome the next generation.
What a wonderful week we’ve had in Derrinacahara! Thank you so much to Catherine White and her staff who were so kind and generous to our younger children who performed their Christmas play for the residents and Day Care Centre at Dunmanway Hospital along with their teacher Carol O’Driscoll.
Off to the cinema to see The Grinch! A treat for 63 marvellous children who, without doubt, are simply the best!
Then who should arrive to say ‘Hello’ only the man himself Santa Claus! Santa enthralled the children and they watched eagerly as he departed on his journey back to the North Pole.
A huge Thank You to Dolores for all the goodies for Timmy’s party. We had the best day x🤗 and to you all for your very thoughtful gifts, treats and wonderful letters and cards of thanks. We genuinely appreciate them all xx
